The first foreshadowing of the season's taste ia furs indicates that the short-haired kind will be the farvorites. On this page you see the subtle moleskin, the lustrous seal, baby lamb and' ermine short-haired furs all of them. Last season's efforts at combining two or more kinds of furs bid fair to be more successful next Winter than they were last. This may be, as it were, the culminating culminat-ing season in that respect. The combination of furs is effective effec-tive if the combination is effective. A paradox! Perhaps. But be as careful about the combination of your furs as you are of your foods. For if carelessly mada each will disagree dis-agree with you. All of the pictures on this page show an effective fur combination. The largest figure of the trio reproduces a graceful coat of wool velour. A distinctive feature is its fulness and the remarkable width of its fur cuffs. The huge fur cuffs are large encfugh to make sleeves for a, coat in a tight-sleeve season. Yet note that the Bleeves are short, despite the striking' depth of the cuffs. The collar is of satin, and fastens near the shoulder, as though a collar of the usual type had slipped far to one side. This collar, of dark satin embroidered in pale colors, is lined with baby lamb a reversal, you observe, of the usual procedure. pro-cedure. In fact, the collar seems to be all reversal. Yet the effect upon the wearer is charmingly chic. A novel note is introduced by the soft sash of the "velour lined with the same' silk as the collar. The novelty of the sash is enhanced by its being tied sc that the lining of the long ends is shown. The pale silk embroidery, on the ends, repeating the color note of the wrap, emphasizes the rich, ness of the wrap, an office which the embroidery. of the reversal .collar also performs. Sealskin and ermine have always been good fur friends. The rich darkness of the sealskin throws into finer relief the snow-like quality of the ermine. The combination always suggests to me the night and1 snow, .or frost upon black velvet. The young woman who wears the sealskin enpe and cap looks the smarter, you will agree, for the ermine stole wound twice about her neck and falling in long ends at the back. An odd but very smart effect is secured by the tailor-made tailor-made girl who wears her scarf of moleskin and her stole of ermine as negligently as though' they were scarfs of mulle. It is a rare grace indeed to wear costly clothes as though they were not costly, with the same easy grace with which you wear the simplest gowns in your wardrobe. My trained eye quickly detects the woman who is wearing a gown of which she is especially proud. Unconsciously she shows a A "Lucile" Harmony Autumn Coat, With Novelties in Collar and Sash and Cuffs protective care of the gown, a maternal prctectiveness. The seasons when it is fashion's caprice to combine furs are not as expensive as they seem. For left-overs can be used in the combination. A chinchilla cloak worn about the collar and cuffs was freshened into i:e'wnes.i by trimmings trim-mings of sealskin. Ermine can be freshened by sealskin or moleskin collar and cuffs. I have seen a moleskin coat beautified by ermine trimmings. Since the watchword of everyday living is "Economy," let me suggest that velvet can be richly combined with comparatively small bits of fur. Prii i I fry ( ttttt fern POT V.
