Show FARMER PRESIDENT SCORED!! M'JUHO Dr. H. E. Stockbridge Refuses Re-fuses to Aid in Second Liberty Loan. WASHINGTON, Sept. 22.-T-Secrotary McAdoo has withdrawn his request to Dr. H. E. Stockbridge of Atlanta, president presi-dent of the Farmers' National congress, for aid in the campaign for the sale of j the Liberty bond issue. Dr. Stock- bridge, replying to a letter requesting l such aid, sent to him and the executi ve , heads of twenty-one other farmers' or-j ganizatious, notified Mr. McAdoo that! the appeal "meets little response from ! us, " and assailed Mr. McAuoo for la- j voriiig the McKellar amendment to the revenue bill, proposing increases in pos- j tal rates on second-class matter, wllich I includes farm and other publications. "You are placing au unjust and burdensome bur-densome tax ou the farmers," Dr. Stockbridge declared, ' 1 by increasing the cost of his professional reading matters. Farmers are patriotic. "We feed, the armies and fight the battles of our country; our farm papers are our chief aid, yet now you threaten them with ruin. We refuse to become party to the crime." In reply Secretary McAdoo said: I am happy to believe that you speak for yourself alone and you do not represent the sentiment of any other farmer in America. I withdraw mv request for your assistance as-sistance in the sale of government .bonds. The patriotic people of America will sustain their gallant soldiers and sailors and carry on this war to victory without "your aid. |
