Show WlM STATE'S " QUOTA DURING WEEK District Exemption Board Will Resume Its Work Tomorrow. Monday the district exemption board will begin certifying the last contingent contin-gent of the drafted men from Utah, and it is expected that by the end of tho week practically every district in tho state will have completed its entire en-tire quota to the national army. At the present time the board has certified 2171 of the 2607 men to be called from this state. This leaves but 426 more to be called to the colors. If the board receives as many certificate lists from the various counties throughout the state as it did l.Tst week tho entire number will be certified and all of the thirty-four districts in the state will have furnished their quota. The number of claims for exemption before the district board is growing as the final lits from the different counties are being turned in. In a number of instances the local boards have certified men for the service who are totally unfit to go into the army on account of physical defects, and as a result the board lias issued a warning warn-ing to the lncal boards to be more careful care-ful in the future. Yesterday there appeared at the offices of-fices of the district board a inolder in the employ of n foundrv eompanv. He ii;:d been certified bv Salt. Lake Citv district .Xo. 1, and when he appeared before the district board he claimed exemption on physical grounds. He exhibited ex-hibited to the board a right hand which had two fingers missing and the remaining re-maining two fingers were in such condition con-dition they could not be closed. He told the board that it was hard for a man in his condition to get a position and desired to be exempted here rather than go to American Lake and be refused re-fused admittance to the national army and perhaps lose his employment. Lafayette La-fayette Hanchett, secretary of the board, gave him a note to appear before be-fore the district board on Monday afternoon af-ternoon to be examined physically before be-fore tho appellate division. Owing to the failure of the district board to secure larger quarters, the present offices are to be altered so far as the furniture is concerned, in order that more room may be had for the work of the board. New rules re- . gardiug the appearance of those interested inter-ested in the exemptions may also be made during the coming week. Members of the district exemption board yesterday expressed themselves as being pleased with the action of the Utah congressional delegation at , Washington in supporting measures for i the relief of soldiers, sailors and draft- j ed men who have mining claims or homestead entries. The law providing ' for a moratorium for soldiers and sailors sai-lors during the period of the war and for six months after is favored by all members of the board. The next" session ses-sion will be at 1:30 o'clock tomorrow. |
