Coach Jack Watson gave his charges the first touch of real foot ha II yesterday afternoon, when he lined up two teams for, tho first scrim- fl- ma?e of the year. Moro than a sufficient number or men for two full teams was out 'jii th campus and more are comins everv day, so that practices will not be hampered bv the lack of men. The boys performed in cood style. Although the coach Is yet undecided as to bow he will 'shape up his asgresatlon with regnrd to a the playing positions of the different men, ' he is getting a line on the material and will begin to place them within another week. i The most encouraging phase, according i to the uoneh, is the way. in which the boys are responding to the call and reporting re-porting every evening. Registration at the college ia progressing in a pleasing manner to the school authorities and to . those who are concerned in the welfare of college athletics. Many of the old dpnts are returning, most of whom S" not. expected to be seen about the campiv on account of army enlistments, and many of these will be of great help to the coaches in different seasons of tha school year. Their Interest will be much bet ter this year than before, it is thought, on account of the ahgence of the competition that usually existed. Coach Watson brought ont the tackling dummies on Thursday afternoon and the boys showed considerable punch, but many of them have yet to learn some of the finer points in tackling, while others of them showed class. During the coming week the squad will be drilled in every department of the game, including scrimmaging, and Wat- son thinks he will soon be able to form some kind of permanent organization. |
