Show PHILANTHROPHY will be the inspiration in-spiration of tho majority of the - ,tertaining for tlie coming week. Teas and card parties for war relief anil for the benefit of causes in which church societies are interested fill the calendar for the week, even taking precedence of parties given for the brides. The two largest philanthropic entertainments enter-tainments for the coming week are a bridge tea to be given by section 4 of the war work committee at the home of Mrs. John T. White on Thursday and a bridge tea on Saturday at the home of Mrs. Joseph Levitt by Radiant Sewing circle, 0. E. S., which has been exten-Tsivelv exten-Tsivelv engaged in Red Cross work since V Vrgiuning of the war. The fingers of Salt Lake society women continue busy in the cause of war relief. Acknowledgment has been received by tho war work depots, with headquarters at 220 Dooly block, of the 629 articles in the way of children's garments and hospital supplies sent to France and also of two large boxes of pillows, tho treasuro bags for the won nded. - ' The latest work adopted by the depots de-pots is the making of kid-lined waistcoats waist-coats for the aviators engaged in war service. Donations of old kid gioves are solicited to be left at the headquarters headquar-ters of the depots. , In connection with war relief work the following from a California paper .will be of interest in Salt Lake: Speaking of Red Cross and knitting, knit-ting, a new task has been discovered discov-ered for any woman and all women. One busy member of the sex has evolved the idea of utilizing not only time, but also those odds and ends of yarn that are the annoyance annoy-ance of every sweater knitter unless un-less she has a small daughter who delights in treasuring things -of the kind. Usually, even from a care-L care-L fully calculated sweater, there is enough yarn left over to knit a doll's carriage robe (unless it be a 'very large doll) or to make wrist-H wrist-H lets or things of the kind. The latest idea, however, is not to make use of tliem for that purpose. Instead they are knitted into ' twelve-inch squares, and these are. Uien forwarded to Loudon to the woman 's emergency corps, where other busy workers j ut them together to-gether to make blanaets that are sent to the Serbians. They are warm anil light and the bright colors col-ors make a particular appeal to that color-loving race. -Already from various parts of this country hundreds of squares have been sent abroad to this organization, of which Mrs. P. P. McGregor is sec retary. Viscountess Cowdray is chairman of the committee, and the Duchess of Marlborough is one of the officers. Doubtless the conglomeration con-glomeration of hues that come if everyone utilizes the left-over of every sweater she has made, would be somewhat startling, but as women from all over the country are responding to the idea, it is probable that the woman's emergency emer-gency corps can harmonize the dif- ferent squares co that they would v not be ' calculated to give night-marc night-marc even to a sensitive Serbian.
