Show Remarkable Increase in Buying ot Mining Slocks During Fifty-one Weeks 16,898,552 Shares Are Bought for $3,838,418.82, Compared to 3,387,020 Shares for $693,472.78 in Year 1914. TERMED a barometer of the mining industry, since it records the decreasing de-creasing and increasing interest of the speculative and the investing invest-ing public, no example could more strikingly Illustrate the revival in mining than a comparison of the transactions on the Salt Lake stock and mining exchange during the rast year and during 1914. There was bought during the past fifty-one fifty-one weeks 16,898,552 shares, at a valuation valua-tion of $3,S3S,41S.92, compared to 3,387,-020 3,387,-020 shares bought during at a valuation of $693,472. 7S. Conservative brokers who have been connected with the local market for the past fifteen years are decidedly optimistic regarding the outlook for 1916. With the United States practically in control of the production of copper, lead and zinc ores, with the demand for all of those metals Increasing, they predict that the coming year will go down in history as one of the most active years on the local exchange ex-change since 1909, when 33,904,308 shares were bought at a valuation of $17,66S,-770.26. $17,66S,-770.26. Organized upon the fundamental idea of safety first for the investor and the broker as well; surrounded by safeguards In the form of a constitution and bylaws by-laws which reduce speculation among the various members to a minimum; acting act-ing as a source of information to the public relative to the many mines of the state, it has been termed by visiting brokers as one of the most conservative and successful institutions of its kind in the west. The Salt Lake stock and mining exchange ex-change was incorporated on December 10, 195. The first call was held on December De-cember 31, 1895, at which time then; were twenty-five charter members, only one of whom Is today a member of the exchange. On that occasion the first transaction to be consummated over the rail in Salt Lake was the sale of 2000 shares of A.iax, which has in the past few years become the Gold Chain, at 4$',fc cents a share. This trade was executed exe-cuted by J. D. Keifer and 11. M. ltyan. In 1908 it was decided to change the corporation to a limited association of neventy-five members. This was done, and it remains in that condition today. Since the organization of the exchange seventeen years ago, the records show that there has been handled, in round numbers. 267,000.000 shares of stock, having a market value of $12O,00n.0O0. It is probable that the number of shares is nearly double this amount and the amount paid out the same, as many of the transactions were on the curb market mar-ket or In various brokerage offices. Trading Increased. The amount of trading from the start gradually increased until 1901, when 24,-000,000 24,-000,000 shares were sold during the year and over $16,500,000 changed hands. From that point there was a gradual decline until 1904 and 1905. From that time until 1908 and 1909 stocks were in demand, and the banner year of i:09 saw close to 35.000,000 shares sold, for over $17,200.-000. $17,200.-000. At times the business aggregated one-third of the bank clearings and clerks were compelled to work far into the night. The daily quotations give a collateral value on all stocks listed and loans can be negotiated on them when necessary. The exchange consists of seventy -one members, many of whom are active brokers. bro-kers. It owns a large building in Kx-change Kx-change place, built especially for the members. K. J. Kvans is president, having hav-ing presided over Its destinies for tho past three years, whilp .lames A. Shorten is the secretary, having been In rhnrge of this branch of the work for almost fifteen years. Business Tabulated.
