Show SEVERE EARTHQUAKE SHOCK IS RECORDED Tremor Is Believed by Georgetown Priest to Have Occurred in Central America. WASHINGTON, Jan. 1. A very severe se-vere earthquake, the heaviest recorded in some time, and lasting almost three hours, occurred in an undetermined location lo-cation today. Seismographs of the Georgetown university observatory began be-gan recording the tremor at 8:43 a. m. The shocks increased in intensity, and between 9:25 and 9:45 o'clock they were violent. Father Francis A. Tondorf, the seis-mographical seis-mographical director, kept constant watch over the instruments, and it was not until 11:33 a. m. that tho vibrations stopped. The vibrations were principally princi-pally north and south. Tie conservatively conserva-tively estimated the distance of the center cen-ter of the disturbance at 3000 miles from Wahinpton. He thought it probable prob-able that tho shocks might have occurred oc-curred in Central America, where there have been a number of disturbances within the last few weeks. |
