Show BATTLE IN EAST GALICIA RAGING WITH VIOLENCE VIENNA, via London. Jan. 1, ln-in p. m. The following official statement was issued by the Austrian war office tonight: Russian war theater: Fighting in East Galicia continues with undiminished undimin-ished violence. Yesterday the brunt of the fighting was on our front in the middle and lower Stripa region. In the region northeast of Buczaz shortly .' after noon the Russian artillery be- .'-came .'-came active, their fire continuing until evening, when the enemy began an attack. at-tack. At some, places they advanced four or five times, as far as our entanglements, en-tanglements, but their assaults everywhere every-where collapsed owing to the severity of our fire. At night the enemy retired re-tired to his original positions, 600 to 10 w paces in t he rear, abandoning hundreds of dead and wounded. The attacks which the Russians made near Jaselwiee, south of Buczacz, and near I'scieczke on the Dniester river, met the same fate as tho-re of the1 middle Stripa region. Bessarabian front: The day was comparatively quiet. The positions occupied oc-cupied by tiie army of General Count von Bot timer on the upper Stripa river and the army ' of General Eduard Boehm-Ermolli on the Ikwa were subjected sub-jected to a hostile artillery fire. The Russian battalion which a t tacked south of Eristianny on the. front occupied oc-cupied by the army of Archduke Joseph Jo-seph Ferdinand was scattered. On the Styr and Bug. northeast of Czar-torysk, Czar-torysk, German and Austrian troops captured hostile advanced positions. Near Kolodia and west of Rafalewka we repulsed an. attack. Italian theater: Yesterday Italian heavy artillery again bombarded the villages of Maiborgeth and "Wolfibaeli, the first reaching its greatest intensity inten-sity at night. On the Cul di Lana the situation is unchanged. Southeastern front: Near Ipek four more guns, which had been buried by the Serbians, have been brought in. On the Tara, there has been skirvn- i ishes only. |
