There was a balance of $930,654.44 in the treasury of the state with the opening open-ing of business December 1, and it was not materially increased or decreased with the close of the year. This fact Is shown by the treasurer in his report to the auditor showing the balances in the various funds. State Treasurer Eagleson has adopted a policy since taking over office of-fice of carrying practically no actual money in the treasury department, but instead depositing it in the various banks as quickly as it comes in, so that interest in-terest can be earned from it. This minimizes min-imizes the risks and makes more niujiey for the state. He also pays all claims against the state by treasury check instead in-stead of actual money. This check is good on any bank fn the state, and is a-negotiable a-negotiable instrument. Xo personal checks of state employees are cashed by tlie treasurer. The experience this state bad ihrotmb the defalcations of O. V. Allen and I-'red M. Coleman, former state and deputy state treasurer, who embezzled $9.fiuu, has resulted in every precaution being taken to safeguard the treasury in the future. The state recently instituted suit i to recover from the National Surely company tlie amount of the Allen and , Coleman shortage, that corporation being j surety on their bonds. All told, including includ-ing the interest, the shortage is now esti- I mated at S135.0C0.
