Show EIGHT CYLINDER HAS GOME TO STAY A. L. Tourssen of Randall-Dodd Randall-Dodd Company Says It Is Happy Medium. About al one hoars nowadays in motoring mo-toring circles is taJk of " fours, ' ' "sixes, ,J "eights" and "twelves." And it sceniH that the number of cylinders cylin-ders in a car ig about the most important impor-tant and paramount issue of the present ! day in motor car building. i From the one-cylinder to the four- cylinder cars the transition was fat and very satisfactory, each addition of a cylinder meaning a tremendous improvement im-provement in the motor. Then after a , short halt came the ' ' sixes, ' ' with a very satisfactory and noticeable improvement im-provement over "the "fours," although four-cylinder motors are still used on many of the best makes of rars today. The twelve-cylinder car made its first appearance thiH season for practical use and it still remains to be seen as to whether it is to prove an ultimate success suc-cess or not. I Speaking of the change AI Tourssen of the Randall-Dodd Automobile com- , pany says; But the "eight" has come to stay. It is the happy medium between the "six" and the "twelve," and to date has proven to furnish the greatest power, the greatest speed and the least vibration of any motor mo-tor used on the higher priced cars. And the very acme of eight-cylinder motor construction is found in the motor used on the Oldsmobile model 44. This motor has eight cylinders cast in two blocks of four cylinders each, and arranged iu V-type for-, mation. It is one of the simplest, most compact aud lightest eight-cylinder eight-cylinder motors of such power ever' designed. The cylinders have a bore of two and seven-eighths inches, while the stroke measures four and three-quarters three-quarters inches somewhat larger cylinder dimensions than would le considered necessary for the weight of the car. On brake tests the motor develops in excess of thirty-five thirty-five horsepower. There has been no departure from the standard Oldsmobile three-point motor suspension. sus-pension. Cylinders are the L-head type, the crank shaft is an unusually unusu-ally large, heat-treated, high car-boned car-boned steel forging. Main bearings measure two and one-eighth by three and one-quarter inches; con-, necting rod bearings, two and one-eighth one-eighth by two and one-eighth inches. The Oldsmobile "eight" model .! 44 brings together a perfect smoothness, smooth-ness, an excess of power, a very strong and very light chassis and a body of very rich beauty, and ad-, vanced style. The Randall-Dodd Auto company of this cit3' announces the arrival of" the Olds ".eights," .which are now to be seen on their sales floors and which will be demonstrated by appointment. |
