The year just elosed was a successful success-ful one for the Utah Agricultural college. col-lege. The institution has grown and its work has improved in every important line of activity. The enrollment is larger than it has been during the previous years, in spits of the elimination of the high school work. The students show more maturity ma-turity and seriousness of purpose, .not a a few of them working their way through school. The fop, spendthrift and class distinctions are not to be found, and simplicity and hard work arc encouraged. The quiet and clean atmosphere of Logan, with its freedom from the distractions of the city, help the student make a success of his work. The faculty is made up of men and women who come from many different sections of the country and from many different institutions. They are comparatively com-paratively young, progressive and scholarly. schol-arly. The average length of service at the A. C. is only about four or five years, for a large number 06. changes were made soon after the administration changed about seven years ago. It has now, however, become fairly stable. These men and women have been at the institution long enough to know well just what is expected of them. They have had excellent training in the best institutions of the country; they are familiar with the equipment, in their departments and have had sufficient suf-ficient experience to be able to make the subject matter of their teaching somewhat secondary and thus enter into the fine points and put the polish and finish on their teaching. Courses Systematized. In the newer lines of work, such as that in agriculture, where the subject matter has only recently been discovered, discov-ered, members of the faculty have written textbooks and outlines" for the laboratory work aud have so organized and systematized the courses until they are fast taking their- place with the time-worn science and are courses. The most significant success the college has made during the last year has been the excellent class work. Last year Professor Langtou of the department of mathematics died. Professor Pro-fessor Stewart of the chemistry department depart-ment accepted the position of associate professor in the University of Illinois and Professor f lark Davis, who receni-!-.- received his doctor's degree froni Colurnhia university, -r employed in the efcomis-trv dcr'-artnicnt. Professor 1 . W. Porter of the same department resumed his duties lat fall, after having hav-ing spent a year at the I'niversity of 1 alirVnia and having obtained the doctor's doc-tor's decree. The experiment station, through state and federal assistance, is devoting its time to discovering facts that wilUhelp T2ricukural practice in this section. The men who are carrying on this work have at hand, through an exchange of bulletins with all the other states, the practice in all the states, and students thus have the benefit of the most recent re-cent development m their line of study. Reaching Homes. i The extension division's aim is to extend the influence of the college to j every corner of the state. This is be- i ing accomplished through its roundups, conventions and shorter schools held throughout the state, directors of boys' and girls' clubs and the correspondence work. Xine county agents and ,two home demonstrators are. devoting their entire time to giving residental help in solving the problems of the farmer, and his wife. More thau 100.00U people peo-ple of the state were reached" 4ast year through these means. The splendid gymnasium, costing $55,-000. $55,-000. with its swimming pool and its indoor in-door track, is, -through tho work of the' physical education department, keeping the students in good health and is adding add-ing to the pleasantness of their stay at college, as well as increasing the efficiency ef-ficiency of their study and class periods. pe-riods. " It was completed about three years ago. A new building has just, been completed com-pleted that houses tho departments of chemistry, physics and bacteriology. It is 70 "bv US feet, three stories high. Tt is iu keeping with the economical policy of the institution and the campus cam-pus generally in being free from adornment, adorn-ment, in being plain, durable and admirably ad-mirably adapted to its purpose. The walls are made of brick and are left without covering, on the inside, while the floors and ceilings are of reinforced concrete. The window frames are made of iron, so that the building is fireproof. fire-proof. It cost ifoo.OOO and raised tho valuation of the plant at Logan to approximately ap-proximately three-quarters of a million, dollars.. View Is 'Broadened. The main lines of work offered by the college are agriculture, agricultural engineering, hdme economies mechanic arts, commerce and general science. Recognizing the diversity in human nature, na-ture, not all students are put through tho same mold, but each is allowed to select, his course under the guidance of the directors of tho school in which he registers. The aim is to broaden the horizon of the student and give him a wider outlook on life, and thus prepare pre-pare him for complete living, to tTain his mind through wrestling with difficult diffi-cult problems, and in addition to help him prepare himself to earn an honest hon-est living by using as material for the above mentioned objects information that will be immediately useful in his life work. The institution reaches out in a helpful way to all the people of the state, and, since it is working largely large-ly along industrial lines, it prides itself it-self in being the school of the masses. Its motto is "Labor is Life." The administrative machinery moves unusuallv smoothly, for a splendid feeling feel-ing exists between president, faculty and students. This helps sgreatly in making the work of tho institution so successful. |
