Another pioneer of the city and state was claimed by death today when Joseph -Barney Wintle, lo years of ao, a resident of Utah since bo7, died at the family home, 787 Twenty fourth street. JHs death, which was duo to the iutirmities of old ai;e, occurred about Kl o'clock this morning. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon, after-noon, with services ia the First ward chape, at 2 o'clock. Born at Yarmouth, Norfolk. Knsjiand, ; 'ebruary '29, 1S40, Air. Wintle came to America with his grandparents when he. was eight years of a;e. After residing resid-ing with them at Philadelphia and St. Louis, the boy, then sixteen years ot age, was hired out by his grandfather to drive an ox team in one of the -Mormon companies that crossed the plains. ! Without relatives to aid him, Mr. Wintle Win-tle reached Salt Lake City in 18o7. lie made one more t ri p to Sit. Louis a nd rode the pony express in Nevada and Wyoming from ISoS to H&2. )t was while eugaged as a pony express ex-press rider Mr. "Wintle carried the news of Abraham Lincoln's election over a route of 110 mites from Fort Carney on the South Platte river to Cottonwood Springs in five hours. On another occasion occa-sion he was chased for twenty miles by Indians, his horse dropping dead at the end of the stretch. Mr. Wintle assisted his patents from St. Louis to Ttah in lHtj"2, crossing the plains for the fifth time. After residing un a farm at West Weber for several years following his marriage, Mr. Wintle resided in several near-by districts of Welter count v and finally came to Ogden in 1P0". During several years he operated a butcher shop. Of the fourteen children born of the second marriage, the following sons and da u ah ters survive the father: Mrs. A. T. Waldron. George R.
