Show STATE MAY RESTORE FORMER TAX SYSTEM ! Failure of Voters to Approve of the N Constitutional Amendments Necessitates Ne-cessitates New Action. The resumption of the old system or tax ; levy probably will be the result of the j failure of the voters of the state to ap-i ap-i prove the adoption of the proposed constitutional con-stitutional amendment listed as question I No. 2 on the slate ballot at the recent : election. ; Such was the general opinion of the members of the state board of equaliza- I tion and of Governor-elect Simon Bamberger Bam-berger after a conference yesterday after- ! noon. The tax levy for the year 1916 was made by the state board of equalization equaliza-tion under the assumption that the : amendment would be adopted, and as a result the mine owners are paying con- ' siderably less than half the taxes under 1 the old system, while other property ; owners are paying as much or more than : in former years. After the conference with the board of . equalization, Governor-elect Bamberger attended a meeting of the Democratic legislative committee a.ppointed yesterday and there expressed the opinion that it might be necessary to revert to the old system of levy unless a, better scheme could be evolved. He was emphatic in the assertion that the taxation must be equalized and suggested that the members mem-bers of the committee get busy on the ways and means. The new system was put into effect by a bill passed at the least session of the legislature and additional legislation will be necessary to set aside the present system. |
