Show CIVIL LIFE WAGES RETARD RECRUITING Army Casualties for the Year Just Closed Are 41; Many Recruiting Stations Are Established. WASHINGTON, Dec. 8. The regular army was 17u commissioned officers and 2"),9S5 men short of its authorized strength on June 30 last, and the next day more than 34,000 men were enlisted under the authorization, according to the annual report of Adjutant General McCain, made public, today. The sudden increase was due to the fact that the first increment of the army increase authorized in the national defense act became available July 1. The report shows that the total authorized au-thorized strength for all branches of the service on a peace fooling during the present year is 13S.S97 men and 7252 officers," while the actual strength on June 30 was 107,641 officers and men. It notes that high wafres in civil lite have prevented the army from obtaining obtain-ing the recruits it needs, although the largest number of recruiting stations established in many years have been engaged in the task. The report discloses that 71,038 regulars regu-lars were on duty in continental United States on July 1, that number including the expeditionary force in Mexico. The report shows that a total of two officers and thirty-four men in the entire army were killed in action, while five additional died from wounds. |
