Show YOUTH AGAINST AGE IN EFFICIENCY TEST Cliicago Employers Ma.king Practical Trial of the Relative Ability of Young and Old Men. CHICAGO, Dec. 8. The work of testing test-ing the efficiency of men between the ages of 45 and 60 alongside of an equal number of voung men was begun today by the committee of fifteen large em-plovers, em-plovers, recently organized, with Benjamin Benja-min J. Eosenth'al, a Chicago capitalist,, at its head. "The committee was organized primarily," pri-marily," Mr. Rosenthalsaid, "to upset up-set the fallacious theory that men between be-tween the ages of ,45 and 60 are fit only for the scrapheap.' In response to advertisements in the newspapers, several hundred applications applica-tions for work from men who had reached middle age or beyond, have been received by the committee, and a large force of clerks, loaned by business busi-ness houses, today began to sift and classify them. "We will start our first test next week," said Mr. Rosenthal. "Twenty middle-aged men whom we have enlisted will be employed by one of the largest houses in Chicago. The head of this house, to make an efficiency test, will put them in the correspondence department. depart-ment. Alongside of them will be twenty young men. and each individual will be given the same work to do. They wall open, sort and file correspondence and do auditing work. "If these twenty middle-aged, men do half as much work as the younger men they will be paid half as much salary. If their efficiency is equal to the young- er men, and they prove it, they will receive re-ceive the same salary. "Eecentlv I took a score of men and rmt them to wrapoine parcels in a large concern. They were all experienced, ami so were the twenty young men who wrapped beside them. Not only did tho older men do as much work as the younger men, but in some instances more." |
