President Poincare has awarded a' gold medal to Mrs. Harry Duryea of New York for her services during dur-ing the last two years as head of an I American aid committee for war victims. ' "I plead with the American people1 not to allow their generosity and compassion 1 to become merely a passing emotion," said Mrs. Duryea when she was in New York last spring. "It has got to last as long as the need for it exists and the end is not yet in sight. America has been magnificently mag-nificently generous in every call for help. The many American organizations are doing do-ing major work for relief abroad, but : there must bo no cessation of the good , work." Mrs. Duryea Is a daughter-in-law of ; General Hiram B. Duryea of civil war , fame. She is an author, society "woman and organizer of the Duryea war relief fund. For the past twelve years she has ; lived almost constantly abroad. She was : In Dinard at the outbreak of the war and i immediately began her -work of relief. |
