Show MIKEB MEETS TMfilC DEATH HOWSLIDE Jack Kivimaki Buried When Avalanche Hits Mining Camp. Jack Kivima-ki. a miner in the employ of the South i-Jecla company in the BifC Cottonwood district, was killed and Ids four companions had an almost miraculous escape from death yesterday aft&rnoon in a snowslide. The slide occurred about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and it was not until more than' three hours later that Kivimaki's broken and crushed body was d Iscovered. Kivimaki and his four companions left the South Hecla mine early in tne afternoon after-noon and went up the mountainside to the southeast of the property to thaw out some frozen water pipes. They had been at. work only a short time when tbe slide occurred, and they all were swept down the mountain, a distance of nearly 1000 feet, by the avalanche of snow. In some manner the four companions of Kivimaki managed to extricate themselves, them-selves, but Kivimaki was caught underneath under-neath an immense amount of snow and is thought to have been smothered and crushed to death before he could make a definite move toward self-preservation. As soon as the slide occurred fully -50 miners went energetically to work to recover re-cover the body of Kivimaki, n not being believed that lie would be found alive, the other miners iu the meantime having fought their way out from the tons of snow that had enveloped them. The rescuers worked feverishly for several sev-eral hours before their labors were rewarded re-warded and the body of the unrortunale miner was found, it was taken to the mine boarding house and will be brought to the city today. The companions of Kivimaki were considerably bruised, but , were extremely thankful that they had I escaped with their lives. 1 Kivimaki was a Finlander and Tils relatives rela-tives reside in Belle Vernon, Pa. The body will be held here pending word as to its disposition. Kivimaki had only been employed at the mine about a month. |
