L warehouse at Pocatello, Idaho, early yesterday morning, morn-ing, according to word received here by Colonel T. G. Webber, general superintendent superin-tendent of Z. C. M. I. Colonel Wtebber estimated the loss at $210,000. The building was valued at $30,000, and the contents at $1SO,000. Insurance covers $ 1 0,000 of this amount. The warehouse is to be rebuilt at once. The walls were left standing, and it Is believed that a part of the goods stored in the basement may have escaped serious damage. The fire was discovered at 5:30 yesterday yester-day morning. The fire department responded re-sponded immediately and every piece of apparatus was put into service. A strong wind, however, made It impossible to save the warehouse, and the firemen had hard work to prevent the spread of the flames to near-by buildings. The O. S. L. roundhouse- and the South Main street garage were fired by flying brands, but in each instance the blaae was quickly checked. Two cars of merchandise were, hauled from the spur next to the warehouse barely In time to save them. The fire finally was brought under control at 10:30 o'clock. The warehouse, formerly a brewery, was remodeled more than a year ago into a distributing depot for Z. C. M. I. It was of brick, two stories high, with full basement, and had been reinforced with steel and concrete. It is supposed that the fire started In merchandise piled near the roof, probably through sparks from a switch engine finding their way into the building. |
