Second Kast street on September was established yesterday by Miss Haltie Anderson, daughter of the proprietor of the place. DeWeese was Lakon from the city jail and was asked to stand outside of the building, in which there are four apartments. apart-ments. It was in one of these apartments that the crime was committed. Miss Anderson An-derson came out of her house. 45ii Second Kast street, which is in the rear of the' apartment building, and placed her hand upon t.iie arm of DeWeese. "You're the man," she said to peWeese. DeWeese asked her if she was positive and she axiswered in the affirmative. Then he admitted that, under the name of r. C. Ilobbins, he em-aged the housekeeping house-keeping rooms in the apartment building from Miss Anderson. UeWeese was then I taken into the room where the murder ; was committed. He described where he ' found the body of his wife and the de-, de-, ecription tallied with the discovery made by the police when the room was entered 1 'by officers on September Goes to Palm Hotel. DeWefse, when taken to the scene of the crime, showed a little nervousness. The police, however, believe that he is naturally nervous, this condition, they think, having been brought about by the constant use of drinks to which DeWeese was addicted, according to his own state-; state-; mentB. He alleged al-leged that the murder was committed while he was absent from inc. apart mc-nt and the- detectives wished to ascertain where he went, lie took the officers to the Palm hotel on "West Third South street, but he said that lie was not absolutely ab-solutely sure that was the place. No person at the hotel remembered having seen DeWeese before. Since PeWeese's surrender, the police have speculated' as to whether the woman he murdered was his wife. It was thought possible that it might have been another woman, in view of the fact that on the nitiht of tiie murder Mrs. Edward Paulson heard a -nan say to the woman vvitu was the one who was evidently killed Inter: "I know what kind of a life you hive lived In San Kraneiseo for the last 3ix years." Tiie police now incline to the belief that Ms. Paulson might have been mistaken In what, she heard. Oiriceis believe that die only two persons who went into the apartment were DeWtese and his wife, known to Miss Anderson and Mrs. Paulson Paul-son and Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Robbhis. Chief White stated last night that the police were salaried that the woman slain was Mrs. DeWeese, formerly Mrs. fisher, but ?aid that it was his intention to obtain ob-tain identification from Mr. fisher, for- i met hiihband of the victim, in New York. ' A few days after the murder was committed com-mitted a dentist was consulted and the teeth were taken from the murdered woman' 6 mouth. A special plate ha.d been made for the teeth and it was proposed ; to establish identity by them. Dentist May Help. I At the time of the crime it was thought hat the woman was from ?an Fran-: Fran-: Cisco, in view of Mrs. Paulson's stdte-i stdte-i ment. Consequently the teeth were sent ; ro a San Francisco dentist. Since that time it has developed that the false teeth were placed in position by a New York ilen list. Chief White wired to the San Francisco dentist a. few days ago to return re-turn the teeth and they are expected to reach Salt Lake today. When the teeth arrive they will be sent to Mr. Fisher in New York. The chief believes that identification will be established owing: to the fact that there Is a peculiar crook in the piate work. If Mr. Fisher cannot positively identify the teeth, he will be asked to take them to a Dr. Steinberg, a dentist who is said to have attended the former Mrs. Fisher. Late yesterday afternoon DeWeese was a.2;ain taken from his cell and questioned at detective headquarters. He declared that he had no statement to make, but desired to express thanks to the jail authorities au-thorities in Chicago for the kindly treatment treat-ment offered him while he was incarcerated incarcer-ated there. He wrote two letters which the police dispatched for him. - Since he gave himself up, DeWeese has told several stories and has contradicted himself considerably. When he surrendered surren-dered he said that on the night of the murder he was absent from home, committing com-mitting a burglary. Yesterday be paid that he did not commit burglary, but that he left the house for another place. He declined to state what caused him to leave home at a late hour and to return early in the morning. DeWeese will be arraigned today. |
