Show A FRENCH PROPOSAL. Georges Ancel, a French deputy, has come forward with he suggestion that the shipping of the entente allies be i pooled after the war for the purpose of ' consolidating the position gained by the allies through the blockade of German Ger-man and Austrian ports. This plan is suggested to offset a possible movement by Germany to regain her foreign trade when the seas are once more free. We do not suppose the suggestion of 11. Ancel will be put into operation. The allies claim to be fighting for the absolute abso-lute freedom of the world, and, of ; course, if they are victorious they will not attempt to dominate the neutral na- i Hons and hold the central powers in economic bondage at tho same time. Instead of lasting peace such a combination com-bination would inevitably lead to another an-other great war in which the whole civilized world would be pitted against the entente, and it would continue until the combination was put out of business. busi-ness. Just now there is much apprehension appre-hension as to what will happen in trade matters after peace is declared, and the question is vitally important to the business interests of tho United States. It is this feeling of apprehension apprehen-sion that causes the great majority of American citizens to demand preparedness prepared-ness on land and sea. |
