Show EVERYBODY FEELS THE TUG OF APPROACHING CHRISTMAS Good Fellow Finds Holiday Spirit Brings Out Best in Human Nature; Warm Hearts Respond to Appeals of the Unfortunate. TO JOIN THE ORDER OF GOOD FELLOWS. : i Order of Good Fellows, Salt Lake City: ' s I live at No street. s I wish to take care of children. I prefer them in the . v. part of the city. Please send me j i a list of names. I enclose stamped and addressed envelope. (Signed) , j; THIS Christmas spirit is a peculiar thing," mused Good Fellow as he crooked his elbow inside a mammoth mail bag and scattered scat-tered an armload of letters across the top of his desk. "Every person throughout the civilized world feels a gentle tug at his or her heartstrings. Though gentle, the tug is firm and the pull is always toward home. Go where you will In this vast land and there you win find men, women and children chil-dren scurrying homeward in response to that tiny little tug. "Those who have no home feel the tug most keenly, because they realize most keenly the pleasure and the true Christmas Christ-mas spirit of which they are deprived. At that time more than any other do we realize the significance of the words 'Be it ever bo humble, there's no place- like home.' The Christmas Spirit. "The Christmas spirit brings out all the good that is in us. Then, as at no other time, our hearts respond to the appeal of the unfortunate a generous, even self-sacrifiolng, response in which the significance of the day found its origin. "I am reminded of all this more keenly because of this letter from a dear little girl: "Dear Santa Claus Last year you were so good to me when my mamma was out of work, and I sincerely thank you. This year mamma has work, but I want to know if you would visit another family that I know needs help. They have no father and only a mother, and she has a little baby, and last Christmas they said Santa Claus didn't bring them anything and their mamma cried about it. They say he ian't going to bring anything this year. I have only mamma and brother and sister, but we will do with just what mamma can get us. The other family has ten children and no father. Their address is "Your loving little girl, "ISABEL ." Mother Makes Appeal. "No one feels more keenly the disappointment disap-pointment of the 'kiddies' than the poor .mother who knows she will be unable to make them happy like other children on Christmas morning. Here is a ' mother who did not have the courage to ask for help from Good Fellow direct, but sent the following appeal to a Good Fellow she knew: "I would like to ask If you would please try to help me for Christmas, because you know I am a widow and have to take In washing for my children's chil-dren's living. They went to a party yesterday and all the children were showing them their Christmas presents pres-ents and they have been feeling bad-I bad-I ly all day because I cannot get them ; anything for I haven't any money." "We need badly a few Good Fellows in Bingham and at least one at Castle Rock," continued Good Fellow. "But i they will respond to the tug of the Christ- i mas spirit. The only thing essential is that they respond quickly just five more days until Christmas." |
