The way was cleared in the senate today for a final vote on Senator Sheppard Ts bill for prohibition in the District of Columbia, Colum-bia, aud it will be put on passage tomorrow. to-morrow. Friends of the measure expect it to pas3. The main fight came over Senator Underwood Un-derwood 's amendment providing a referendum refer-endum of the question to District of Columbia residents. The amendment was beaten in committee of the whole 38 to 3S. Senator Underwood gave notice no-tice that he would ask for a separate vote on it when the bill with amendments amend-ments came up for final action. There is little chance that the tie can be broken by "Vice President Marshall, since he is to leave Washington before tbo senate convenes tomorrow. Senator Sheppard showed a disposition disposi-tion to press for a final vote tonight, but there was evidence that any attempt to do so would result in a filibuster, and after much parliamentary maneuvering maneu-vering the senate went into executive session and left events to take the ordinary or-dinary course tomorrow. |
