Show PLAN TO RAISE FUND FOR MI GUARD Ogden Will Co-operate With Salt Lake in Caring for Dependents. OGDEN, July 3- In an effort to make state-wide the movement to provide a fund of not less than 525,000 to aid dependent de-pendent families and relatives of Utah militiamen, a committee representing several Salt Lake and Ogden organizations organiza-tions conferred Informally with the Ogden city commissioners tonight. The commissioners com-missioners virtually promised to appoint five Ogden men to serve on the general state committee which is to raise the relief re-lief fund and supervise its distribution. The visiting committee was composed of P. J. Moran, chairman of the Salt Lake contingent; Will Farrell and J. D. Larson, also of Salt Lake; R, E. Bristol and J. P. Casey of this city. ' The plan, as explained by Mr. Moran and the other Salt Lake committeemen, is to obtam a loan of $25,000 on notes to be signed by members of the general committee and others to the extent of $1000 per man or firm. It Is contemplated that very little more than $25,000 will be needed to provide pro-vide for those who have been left without with-out support by reason of guardsmen responding re-sponding to the call. The principal idea is to have a fund available for immediate distribution when the first calls are received re-ceived for assistance. It is deemed important by those already al-ready appointed to represent Salt Lake on the general relief committee that the movement should be made state-wide, for the reason that the relatives of guardsmen guards-men summoned from Ogden, Logan or any other community of the state are as much entitled to assistance as those of Salt Lake. On behalf of the local commissioners, commis-sioners, Mayor A. R. Heywood said the board members would consider the matter and probably appoint Ogden's five members mem-bers at the next meeting of the commission, commis-sion, Wednesday morning. In connection with the conference, it was intimated by Mayor Heywood and others that the action of Ogden business men in subscribing to a fund for the purchase of a motor truck for troop B of this city had been untimely and Ill-advised. Ill-advised. It Is the opinion of the Ogden commissioners that this is a matter which should be left entirely to the federal government gov-ernment and that the war department has already taken action looking to the equipment of the Utah guardsmen with motor trucks. Immediate steps will be taken to stop payment of the contributions, contribu-tions, pending further consideration of the matter. Eleven Ogden individuals and business firms pledged $250 each for I the fund with which to make the purchase. |
