The Russians are battering persistently at the solid wall of the German Ger-man defenses west and north of Lutsk, beyond the Shara river. The Germans have taken the offensive at various points and fierce battles are reported daily, but with little change in the alignment. align-ment. The Germans are pouring reinforcements reinforce-ments to this front from Kovel, Vladimir-Volynski and Sokal, apparently making -a desperate effort to push the Russians back upon Lutsk. Their only success has been to bend the Russian flank position, at the cost of a fearful toll in dead, into an arc centering on the village of Torchin, 15 miles northward of Lutsk. Alpng the whole j line northward to Riga the Germans are attacking on widely wide-ly separated and narrow fronts, but apparently ap-parently without coordination. The only success admitted by military critics is in the region northwest of Nowo-grodek Nowo-grodek where the Germaus threw a force across the Kiemeu. Little importance im-portance is attached to this due to the swampy nature of the terrain which, it is believed, makes the development of an offensive impossible. Geueral Brusiloff's advance in the Kolomea region has distinctly slowed up, but continues to record successes. RUSSIANS REPORT MANY GAINS AND SOME SETBACKS PETROGRAD.
