Show ! DETECTIVE FGRGE IS 10 BE rWIZED Former Sheriff Joseph C. Sharp Is Placed in Temporary Tem-porary Charge. J. Parley White, chief of police of Salt Lake (. ity, jiluus to develop a detective service in his department which shall lie a separate unit in the police organisation organ-isation and which will be under the .-Hi pevvision of an experienced police officer. of-ficer. To aid in outlining the plans of the new department, and to assist in selecting the unrulier of detectives thought necessary for maximum efficiency, effi-ciency, Chief White yesterday placed Joseph C. h.irp, former sheriff of Salt iiake countv. in charge. .Mr. Sharp wiil remain in chnrfre for two weeks at least, and at. the end of that period will be asked by Chief Sharp to remain in tho service. Ir. is i:ot known whether Mr. Sharp will accept ac-cept the new position to bo created as rluet" of the detective service, but Chief of Police White said yesterday that he believed the vieran officer would seriously se-riously consider it. Larger Force. "1 sincerely hope so," Chief White said, "as he' is one of the best men for the position in the state." Although the plans for tho new service ser-vice are'"onlv tentative, it is deemed likely that when formed they will call for a larger detective force, that they will name n capable mau to act us chief of. tho force, and that the. department will be operated independently of the other police departments. This svstom was in vogue here prior to the in'cumbcney of Chief B. If. Grant, but Chief Grant on entering office early nbolished the detective, captaincy, diminished di-minished the force somewhat anil placed his police captains as' directors of the duties of the citv detectives. At the time of Chief Grant 's- coming mto office, of-fice, liiley M. Beckstead was chief of detectives', lie is now one of the police captains. Ready in Two Weeks. In speaking of the innovation, Chief Wrlute..'esterday said: It will require at least two weeks to line up the service the way we want it lor maximum efficiency. During that time Mr. Sharp will act as chief of detectives, and with me he will study out the plans of government and probably the duties of the citv detectives, which will later be proffered the city commissioners commis-sioners for ratification. These, plans will doubtless call for more detectives and for a chief of the department, and it is my sincere hope that Mr. Sharp will see fit to accept tho position that will be offered him. He is undecided at present, but I think he will consider it seriomdv wdien he learns that tho new department will play a prominent prom-inent role in the police work of Salt Lake City. Mr. Sharp ""as for four y?ars sheriff of Salt Lake county. During that period the present chief of police was his chief deputy. Prior to his duties as sheriff of Salt Lake county Mr. Sharp was chief criminal deputy of Salt Lake countv coun-tv for eight years. |
