Show MEXICANS PREPARE TO RESIST INVASION Torreon Will Probably Be the Main Base of Car-ranza's Car-ranza's Army. EAGLE PASS. Texas, July 3. Mexican troops throughout the north of Mexico are being concentrated along sound military mili-tary lines, according to close students of military affairs among officers here. News reaching the border Indicates that the general plan being followed by the Mexican government Is to scatter small mobile bodies of cavalry throughout the country just south of the border and concentrate con-centrate their rnain forces at points some distance in the interior, the location and railroad connections of which make possible pos-sible the speedy dispatch of troops in any direction to meet attack and also allow the movement of ammunition and supplies sup-plies when necessary-. Reports indicate that this general plan In being followed from the Gulf of Mexico Mex-ico to the Gulf of California. Mexican troops movements have been almost continuous con-tinuous in some sections and it is believed be-lieved that in some cases the same troops have been moved back and forth alone a certain line many times. From sources regarded as reliable, reports would seem to indicate the following possihle. Mexican Mexi-can bases in the north: Monterey, Larn-pazos. Larn-pazos. Monclova, Cuatro Cienegas, Sierra Mojada, Torreon, Chihuahua, some point between Nacozari and Fronteras, Hermo-slllo Hermo-slllo and some point on the wept const-Of const-Of these, Torreon, from its location and railroad advantages, probably would be the main base. A force fit Monterey would be In a position to oppose an advance ad-vance from Brownsville and guard the line leading to Tampico. The force at Tampazos would he available avail-able in event of movement from I,arHo and could readily be switched to aid in the repulse of movements (Continued, on Page Two.), MEXICANS PREPARE TO RESIST liVAS10iM (Continued from Page One.) originating at Brownsville or Eagle Pass. The Monelova garrison would attempt to hold the line south from Eagle Pass. Prom Cuarto Cicnegas on the east and Sierra Mojada. on tho west troops could bo sent into the territory opposite the Big Bend district of Texas, through which no railroad operates. Cuarto Oienegas and Hiorrn Mojada are railroad terminals t and well-used trails lead from each into tho district opposite Presidio, Texas. Chihuahua City would seem a natural base for oporations against a column moving into Mexico from El Paso and also is so located as to feed columns operating In western Chihuahua in the direction of the line now held by General Gen-eral Pershing. Cut off by tho Sierra Madras, through which there are few passes available for , troops, the Mexican forces in Sonora, it is believed, would be forced to conduct practically a separate campaign along tho Nacozari-Fronteras line, being drawn across the main line of advance from -Douglas, and those at HerniosiHo being f available against a force marching south from Nogales. Torreon, connected by railroads with Mexico City, Monterey, Saltillo, Durango, Chihuahua and Juarez, is so placed as to be the main supply station of the Mexican army. |
