CHBJSTJANJA, May 3. Another advance for women has to bo recorded in the admission of the first member of the fair sex to the 2sTorwcginn Academy of Science. Miss Kristine Bonnevie of Chrlstiania, who has been thus distinguished, is a doctor of philosophy, besides holding an appointment in the zoological laboratory lab-oratory of the, university here. When oyly twenty years -old .she passed her latTi'culation'exaiiiiua.tifln ill the university, and after making zoology zoolo-gy her special-field for some years, she became conservator of tho zoological laboratory in 1900. Tu the five following years, in addition addi-tion to conducting the "instruction of students preparing for a final degree in mathematics and natural science, she Sroduced several scientific works in orway, Germany and the United i States. In J.90G the degreo of doctor of philosophj' was conferred on hor. Her studies have carried her not only along tho long Norwegian coast, but also to several European and American universities. Besides all that she is a keen politician. Tn 1907 she was elected a member of tho Christiania municipal council, and when tho new political party, the Liberal Left, was organized two years afjo, she was chosen as vice chairman of tho Christiania Chris-tiania branch, as well as .being a member mem-ber of the central committee of tho party. It may be mentioned hero that Scandinavian Scan-dinavian women are keener than ever to keep abreast of the times. In Denmark Den-mark 7S3 girls have .just passed the matriculation examinations at the Copenhagen Co-penhagen university. They are now. entering special studies for the church, law and medicine. It is thirty-four years since the first, woman sLudont passed her examination and entered her name on the roll of this university. |
