Show I Manager Finlay Satisfied With Development During Last Month. ACCIDENT AT MILL CAUSED SOME DELAY Reduction in Concentrating Expenses Is Considered Possible. According; to tlio report of General Manager J. R. Finlay df the Goldlleld Consolidated Mines company, presented to the president and directors of that company, Iho Consolidated mines during the month of January produced 25, -7 wet tons, or 2I.0S0 dry tons of ore. ol the approximate value of 5785. -IKS. The loss In tailings amounted to 555,b9S, giving giv-ing an estimated recovery of ?729,ioa. Deducting the costs of mining, milling and transportation, the company's total profit for the month amounted to Sr10,a00. In his report, Manager Finlay says: "It will naturally be of Interest to the directors to note the offect of an Increased tonnage on operating costs, Ii. my telegram of January 81, I estimated estimat-ed the total expense at 5197.000. This appears to be an tmdor-csilmato to the extent of $13,000. This arisen from the fact that the estimate was made simply on Iho total number of men employed', calculating $9.75 per shift. It appears now that the increased tonnage calls for a. larger consumption of supplies In pro-portion pro-portion to labor. The total sum of $13,000 can be accounted for In two j Items. First An Increase In supplies and labor at iho mine of about $0000; and, second, some additional expenses at the mill caused by finishing up conslruc-tlon conslruc-tlon work which last month was charged to construction, but this month to op-crating, op-crating, and also some supplies lost by fire, and an additional consumption' of chemicals and supplies due to the freozo-up freozo-up and shortage of water In the early part of January. Hj Costs Less. "However.' after making these corrcc-tions. corrcc-tions. wo still find that the totul cost has coma down a little, principally in the Item of general expense. The cost of mining and development Is a few cents lower than for December, and tho cost of milling a few cents higher. On the whole, I think It Is safe to say that the reduction in costs, due to a production of 25,000 tons per month, as nculust 20,000, will be almost entirely In tho ovcr-head ovcr-head charges. It Is too early to figure on much reduction In other directions, but when our difficulties at the mill arc fully overcome there should be somo re-ductlon re-ductlon there. "The total advance made in devclop-merit devclop-merit headings Is, so far as I know, the largest on record, being as follows: "Combination, S-iO feet; Mohawk, 1020 feet; Red Top. 1T.2S feet; Jumbo, 1375 feet; total, -1DC3 feet. "Of this development, a total of SoS feet or somewhat less than 20 por com, j was in ore. Mill Records.. "The explosion of an oil tank on Janu-ary Janu-ary 2G caused a. loss of about $5000. The machine shop and carpenter shop at the mill were consumed, together with a car-loud car-loud of oil and some lime Tho Incident was very much exaggerated In the news-papers. news-papers. We arc taking additional pre-cautions pre-cautions against lire throughout the property. "In spite of difficulties caused by the weather and fire, the mill has a most gratifying record for the month. It has proved its capacity for treating 000 tons, but we should count on S50 tons for nor-mal. nor-mal. The increased output Is obtained without any loss In metallurgical effl-clcncy. effl-clcncy. The mine is In good condition to maintain Its present output without 1 any great effort. The principal llmita-tlon, llmita-tlon, both on ore production and dcvcl- Hl opmcnt. is the capacity of the com- j pressors." Boston Copper Market. James A. Pollock &.
