The first round of the thirty-two matches in the National Na-tional indoor lawn tennis championship singles, on the board courts of tho Seventh Sev-enth regiment, was decided today. In tho tlrst round the best matches were thoso in which Carl R. Gardner, tho Callfornlan. defeated S. W. Merrlhow, 6-3. G-l. Another Callfornlan. H. D. Henry, was defeated by G. F. Touchard, formerly former-ly of the Pacltlc coast. 6-0. 6-1. Few collegians fared well. D. 12. Roberts Rob-erts defeated the Harvard player, P. T. Large. Jr.. G-2. 6-1. J. L. 11. Todd, Jr., of Fan wood, N. J., defeated J. M. 1 lot-combs, lot-combs, Jr., of aYle, 7-5. 1-6. 6-1, and A. S. Cragin defeated F. M. Walrus. Yale, 4-6. G-l. 6-4. but K. II.
