Show DtSEflSE TAKES OFF DUCKS BY HUNDREDS Strange Malady Makes Appearance Appear-ance Among Flocks Along Shores of Utah Lake. Special to The Tribune. PROVO. Aug. 30. Former County Fish and Game Warden Josh Jones has spent much tlmo within tho last few weeks in examining the wild duck situation, and he Is authority for the statement that there an; more ducks in this vleln-itv vleln-itv than there havo been al a corresponding correspond-ing time for twenty yours. Mr. .loncu also says that (here Is some kind of disease in his opinion It Is duck cholera which is killing tho ducks by the hundreds. hun-dreds. He says that the theory advanced ad-vanced by some, that It is starvation '13 mere nonsense;" that there Is an abundance abun-dance of food for wild fowl in and about tho s( reams and lakes. That the ducks are dylnp there is not the least doubt, but Mr. 'Jones Is positive In the statement state-ment that It is disease and not drouth that is causing the mortality. Mr. Jones has caught and examined ducks In tho different stapes of the disease dis-ease and he says the blood supply Is not diminished to any marked extpnt. and from all appearances if the ducks starve it is bocauso they become so wealotrom the ravages of disease that they are unable to fly, or even walk on the shores of the lake. In some Instances, Mr. Jones savs, he has watched ducks slowly paddle to tho shore, but. they had not sufficient strenpth to help themselves to the food, which is abundant at the water's edpes. and then they struggle to the land and die. Hundreds and thousands of dead ducks are to be seen on the shores of the hiko and filong the sloughs where they congregate. con-gregate. Mr. Jones does not know of anv' cum for the disease, but ho thinks that the tlsh and gamo oftlcors should Investigate, and if there Is any remedy It should be applied. Mr. .rones also says that persons should bo warned against picking up the ducks and putting them to use. because there may be danger of a contagion. |
