Show ROOSEVELT INTERESTED IN GROWTH OF WEST ARLINGTON, Colo., Aug. 30. After leaving Pueblo. Colo., Roosevelt enjoyed viewing tho great stretch of semi-arid country along the line of the railroad. He took a special Interest In observing evidences of Irrigation, especially that which has resulted In developing a beet sugar Industry in this vicinity. At Ordway, Colo., all. the long lines of freight cars afforded a vantage ground for men who hud climbed to the top of them to get a look at the visitors. The train had hardly stopped when a young mrfn brought to the rear end of Col. Roosevelt's car a crate of choice cantaloupes. canta-loupes. The colonel received them and lifted them into the car, remarking to the crowd that they could see ono reason why It .was a great pleasure for him to get back to the west. "I enjoyed Europe," ho said, addressing the crowd, "but I cannot tell you how homesick I was and how glad I was to get back to my own people whom 1 know and whose feelings 1 understand. There Is much to be done In Improving America." he added. "The people abroad got their chief knowledge of America from reading some scandal about us, but after all Is said and done there Is not another place on tho face of the globe where men can lead the life that is led hero. As the train pulled out a big watermelon water-melon was handed to the colonel. At Sugar City, Colo., Col. Roosevelt congratulated the peoplo on the sugar beet Industry they had developed. |
