Show THE BOARD "SUSTAINED." It appears in certain quarters the bad faith of the Board of Education with respect to its nllogcd raise in tho teachers' pay is just coming into dis-I dis-I gusted general notice. But it ought io have been known all along. There was no secret about it; in fact, it was urged as an objection against the old members who were candidates for ro-olectiou ro-olectiou duriug tho recent, school election, elec-tion, campaign, aud the people apparently appa-rently approved of that bad faith. The Tribune, on November 2,-lth, said with respect to this alleged raise in the pay of the teachers: "But they don't obtain ob-tain much, after all, because the denial of pay during tho holidays and the holiday hol-iday week of Christmas aud New Year ;s practically nullifies the very small raiso that the' have received." Tho Tribune in its local news 3-cstcr-da3. and the Herald also, reported tho present resentful feeling and objection to that sort of bad faith. The Board gave out during the school campaign that tho teachers were to receive a. substantial sub-stantial raiso of pay, but whou this was examined, as The Tribune examined it at the time, it was very clear that thero was iu fact, no raise. . Tho Herald Her-ald 'a long analysis of the matter was practically a repetition of the examination exami-nation which The Tribuuo made of this question at tho lime wheu it was a question before the people here to be decided. The law appenrs to be on the side of the Board, at least technically, and tho raiso made by the Board merely provided for the deficiency which the Board foresaw the teachers would have to face in this deprivation of pay during dur-ing tho holidays. It was altogether wrong to consider the alleged raise as an increase of pa Tho deduction during dur-ing the holidays, apparently justified by tho reading of the law, was provided for by tho Board, aud that was all. Thore was, in faut, no raise, although it was pretended that thero was ono. The people of this city had full opportunity op-portunity to pass upon this matter at the school election. They did pass upon it, sustaining the action of tho Mormon, Mor-mon, elders who wore running as candidates can-didates for membership on tho Board Those candidates wero the old members, mem-bers, and in every case thoy wero reelected. re-elected. This in spite of the fact that tho truth now complained of was specifically and publicly sot forth It is perfectly proper for those members now to insist upon the fact that their action was sustained in their re-election by tho people, and that there is no reason now to find fault-In fault-In so looking at the case, it is difficult diffi-cult to see how there can bo any valid objection raised now to the ac tion of the Board in this matter. The wholo question, precisely statod, wai raised during the cainpaigu, was undoubtedly un-doubtedly considered by tho voters in making up their choice for candidates, and by a very largo majority tho action ac-tion of the candidates as members ot the Board was sustained in their reelection. re-election. So far as we can soe, that closes out tho question absolutely, and there is nothing further to say about it. |
