Ah soon as it is granted, tho defendants will offer bail, pending appeal to the miporior court. The four defendants aro John II. Sanderson, Philadelphia, contractor for tho furniture; James M. Shumakcr, Johnstown, superintendent of the board of public grounds and buildings at tho time the contract for tho furniture was let; "William P. Snyder. Spring City, and William L. Mathcus, Media, respectively, respective-ly, auditor-general and stale treasurer during tho operation of tho contract, and by virtuo of their positions members mem-bers of tho board of grounds and buildings. build-ings. Tho men wero convicted of defrauding de-frauding the state out of $19,308 in a contract for wooden furniture. Other charges involved largo sums in the aggregate. ag-gregate. The men wero tried last spring and last week they wero refused a new trial. Tho stato superior court this afternoon granted a supersedeas to cach of tho four defendants iu tho slate capitol conspiracy con-spiracy case, sentenced to two years' imprisonment, ponding an appeal to the superior court. Bail in tho sum of $25,000 was fixed and it was entered in llarrisburg this afternoon. Tho prisoners pris-oners will then bo released and t.ho case, will be argued before tho superior court next spring or summer. |
