Show ; EYE-WITNESSES TELL HOW ANNIS WAS SLAIN FLUSHING. N. Y.. Doc. IS. The trial of Thornton J. Ilalns on a charge of aiding aid-ing his brother, Captain Peter C. TIalns, Jr.. In the klUlng of William E. Annls, was adjourned tonight until Monday, after a day In which tho state developed the strongest testimony so far adduced. Two witnesses, Herbert. L. Funke and Arthur Andrews, eye wltnessos to the shooting, swore that there was an Interval between tho llrst shot llrcd by Captain Halns at Annls and the others that came In fairly vapid succession. Both of thoso club members declared positively that Thornton Ilalns pointed his' revolver at those on tho float after the llrst shot and beforo tho succeeding shots were fired. An exhaustive cross-examination cross-examination on this point, material to the prosecution's case, failed to shake thfilr testimony. Andrews staled that following tho llrst nhot he saw the defendant de-fendant point his revolver at witness's father. "Thore was a shot, then an Interval, when thero was some more shots In quick succession, then a pause, and a lust shot, which went through the sail. I ran whon J saw Thornton point his revolver at my fathor. and stood under tho dock," said Andrews. Witness Funke pave a graphic description descrip-tion of tho shooting of Annls. Standing by with his arms folded, the enptaiu waited until Annls's boat swept up beside be-side the lloat. he said, then lifting the obscuring sail Ilalns llrcd several shots at the publlHhcr. |
