Wilbur Wright, tho Amorican aeroplauist, of Dayton, O., established a new world 's record for heavier-than-air machines today to-day while tr-ing for the Micbelin cup, remaining iu the air one hour, fifty-three fifty-three minutes nnd llfty-nine seconds. The best previous record is ono hour, nine minutes and forty-flvo seconds, which Mr. Wright made October 10. The aeronaut attained an average height of twenty-four feet today and the distance was. officially measured as sixty-ono and one-half miles, which does not include tho wide sweeps and turns made during tho flight. He descended becauso tho oil fecdor got out of order. Tho flight was mado in a light brcoze, occasionally broken by puffs of twenty miles an hour. Tho Michqlin cup is to be awarded to the aviator who makes the longest aeroplane aero-plane flight before December 31, 1008. Mr. Wright closed n triumphant day by achieving another record, flying to a height of 3G0 feet in a strong wind, nnd winning tho Sarthe Aero club's prize for height. At first it was thought that the violonco of tho breeze would compel Mr. Wright to postpone his effort, ef-fort, but he launched his machine and circled nround and around tho field. When soaring at ninety feet, a sudden gust of wind caught the aeroplane, causing caus-ing it to plungo violently backward. Tho spectators wero terrified, but Mr. Wright soon righted his craft. After ten minutes tho wind had moderated and the aeroplane soared upward and passed high over a lino of captive balloons bal-loons marking a distauco of 300 foot. Then it desconded and after again circling cir-cling the field was brought to earth, landing in front of tho door of the shed in winch it ia housed. Tho Aero club tonight gave a banquet ban-quet in Mr. Wright's honor. |
