Show THREATENED THE CHAUFFEUR Auto Knocks Old Man Down, Crowd Was Ready to frlob the Driver of the Machine. Sympathetic Newsboys Howled for Sympathy, and Then Stole Victim's Vic-tim's Scattered Money. J. T. Wood, an elderly man living at 746 East First South street, was knocked downi and run over by an automobile au-tomobile at the corner of Second South and Main streets, shortly after C o'clock last night. Mr. Wood was painfully pain-fully but not seriously Injured and was able to go home unaccompanied. The accident brought a largo crowd to tho sceno and threats were made against the owner of the atitomoblle, William Burridge, Jr., of 65 Grape street. The crowd refused to allow him to proceed until the extent of the injured in-jured man's injuries were ascertained. Was Towing- a Cripple, The Burridge machine had broken down on its way in from the races at the fair grounds and was ln the tow of a machine belonging to the Utah Automobile company. The active machine ma-chine paired around the corner with the disabled one at the end of twenty feet of rope. Mr. Wood had waited until un-til the llrst machine passed', and then, not seeing the rope in the dusk, attempted at-tempted to cross in front of the second one. He was knocked down and the second machine .struck him, one wheel passing over his right shoulder and crushing Hat a dinner bucket which he had in his hand. The cries of warning uttered at the moment of the accident by spectators, brought a crowd of two or three hundred hun-dred people, who surged around the automobiles and made numerous uncomplimentary un-complimentary remarks mixed with threats. Mr. Wood was extricated from under the machine and refused to go to a drug store, saying that he could get home. Newsboys Got His Money. When the accident occurred the victim vic-tim had a handful of money, which was scattered on the street and later gathered up and confiscated by newsboys news-boys who had been loudest in their sympathy. No arrests were made, although al-though Policeman Barlow took the names of those concerned for future reference. |
