Show FRANCE'S PROPOSAL. Government's Project for Separation of Church and State. PARIS. Oct. 20 Premier Combea today presented tho Government's project for tho separation of church and Stato to tho commlttco of the Chamber of Deputies who have charge of the subject. Tho measure embraces twenty-eight articles, which do not differ materially from tho Combes measure heretofore proposed. Some of the chief features of tho Government's Govern-ment's bill are as follows: "Instead of making an outright separation, separa-tion, as the committee proposed, M. Combea provides for a period of transition, transi-tion, with the view to the organization o church conditions, and allows the clergy an indemnity of -ICO francs for four years following the neparatlon, In order to permit per-mit of their making new arrangements for tho support of the churches. "A system of pensions ls provided for the dignitaries of tho churches, according to ago and position; provllon ls made against public religious manifestations on tho streets and highways: tho general :m-pcrvlslon :m-pcrvlslon of cults Is retained; tho French embasav to the Vatican ls suppressed, and there are many detailed provisions for carrying out tho now regime." |
