Show Viewmont Defeats Roy On The Track By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL - Viewmont tracksters used their depth along with clean sweeps in two events to hand Roy a 79-57 setback in a Region One dual meet held last week at the Viking field. VIEWMONT swept the long jump and pole vault to pull, away from the Royals. Even in the events that the visiting Roy team won, the Vikes claimed second, and third places. Mike Buttars and Marty Ford exchanged places in the hurdle events with Buttars winning the high hurdles, with Ford in second place and then Ford winning the intermediate inter-mediate event with Buttars right behind him. THE SPRINTS belonged to Kevin Christiansen of Roy, who is one of the fastest in the state this year, but the Vikings were ahi j to pick up second and third place points in both the 100 and 220 yard dashes. Senior Rollie Jaench placed second in the 220 and third in the 100 while teammates team-mates Sam Woolen was second in the 100 and Jeff Stringfellow third in the 220. Sophomore John Mitchell picked up first place points winning the 880 yard race while Brad Street and Brad Hansen picked up valuable points with a second and third finish in the 440. ROY MADE a move on the Viewmont team with a clean sweep in the mile event but the Vikes came right back with Mark Thomas winning the two mile with Brian Holland taking third in the same race. The Vikes started their domination in the field events with sweeps in the long jump and pole vault. Marty Ford, Blake Walker and Fox pulling it off in the long jump and Mike Twede, Hill and Elkin-ton Elkin-ton in the pole vault. VIEWMONT almost pulled off another sweep in the high jump but they settled for a first and second from Blake Walker and Ford. Viewmont then picked up points in the shot competition with Scott Barlow and Mark Flake taking second and third and Brad Gibson along with Art Whitby doing likewise in the javelin. Marv Callicott rounded out the field event scoring with a third place effort ef-fort in the discus. VIEWMONT had their troubles in the relays as they were disqualified in two of them, the third one, which was the mile relay, they won. The Vikings are now looking forward to their meet this week with rival Bountiful on the Viewmont track on Wednesday. |
