Show American League Standings? By PETE FRITCHIE The 1979 Major League season in the American League might turn out something like this: EASTERN Division: The Yankees are everyone's favorite. After all, they came back like champions in the World Series. And they've added Tommy John and Louis Tiant. They have to be liked. But the race last year was very close. This is a very tough division. Boston is potent, po-tent, and may not have so many injuries. Milwaukee is really making a move to win it, and both Baltimore and Detroit are long shot hopes. Anything could happen in this division. The opposition is too even, and there are too many tough teams for confident picks. has to go with the Kansas City Royals but this year the Royals may have it even tougher than last year. The Angels have high hopes, with Rod Carew. Texas might improve even though the team lost several big-name hitters. The White Sox look better. Gene Mauch keeps Minnesota respectable. And if Frank Tanana comes on with his good fast ball this year the Angels could be a surprise western division winner. |
