Show Bountiful Wants A Better Head For Beer Rules BOUNTIFUL - The city council agrees that a better criteria for issuance of beer licenses in Bountiful is badly needed, but how to go about establishing that criteria is not an easy solution. THE BEER license problem came to light a couple of weeks ago when two self-serve gasoline stations petitioned the city for a license to sell beer. The council agreed to issue the license to one establishment, establish-ment, but refused the license to another. And without any real criteria. LEGALLY, THE council was informed, the present city beer license ordinance has no criteria for accepting or denying a petition for a Class "A" beer license. The present ordinance only broadly seeks that the issuance is-suance of such a license will not interfere with the public peace and morals of its residents, that the establishment establish-ment being issued the license is not located "in a close proximity" of a school or church, and that open and closing hours be obeyed. NOW THE city is looking to other means of restricting the sale of liquor (beer) licenses. Some alternatives, as practiced prac-ticed by neighboring communities, com-munities, including zoning restrictions, limit the number of beer licenses based on population, increase the license fee (frpm $60 to $200 or $300 annually), and prohibit future issuance of licenses to gasoline service stations. Councilwoman Phyllis Southwick asked that the matter be tabled for further study. The council unanimously agreed. , |
