Show Aerial pesticide spraying causes county concern "Complaints about aerial crop dusting and questions about the effects of the pesticides used in the area have been formally registered by the Uintah County Health Department in the past few weeks. These contacts have caused some concern to our department," said Steve Higley, sanitarian. we are aware that the potential problem of aerial pesticide spraying is here and at present our department is conducting investigations, in conjunction con-junction with the state and federal officials," Higley said. "At this time we have no immediate solutions that can be issued, because facts and research data have not been compiled. Therefore, in regard to the present situation, we strongly urge parents, to guard their children and themselves in order to reduce possible accidental contact with the pesticides." The Health Department suggests that persons can accomplish what was staieu in me above paragraph by observing ob-serving the following precautions: Do not stand in the open or allow children to stand in the open when the aircraft is in the immediate area applying pesticides. "We advise people to remain indoors, with windows and doors closed to reduce accidental contact from over-spray or drift carried by the wind. Anyone who has come in contact or believes to have suffered ill effects from these aerial spraying practices should contact the local health department, 789-0472. Also we stress that they report immediately to their family physician if they show possible signs of insecticide poisoning," Higley added. "Symptoms can vary quite a bit, depending on the condition of the person," explained Higley. "The most common symptoms are extreme headaches, nausea, vomiting. These usually will occur within from one to four hours after exposure. "We are not closing our eyes to the situation," said Higley, "but we do need people to contact our office with any complaints they have in conjunction con-junction with the aerial spraying or any problems they have concerning environmental en-vironmental health," the Sanitarian concluded. |
