Show 4th of July visits down at F.G. The Fourth of July holidays were busy as usual at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, but the number of people were down considerably con-siderably from years past. According to John Twiss, Ashley National Forest Ranger, this is probably due to the 4th being on a Wednesday, and the high price of gasoline. Campgrounds have been filled to capacity for the last three years, but this year, there were spaces available in several campgrounds. Boating and river running were also down in numbers of water enthusiasts. A new restriction is now in effect on the Flaming Gorge Ranger District. Individual campground units are restricted to one family or 10 people per unit maximum. This restriction is necessary to alleviate the crowding by large groups into individual camp sites within the campgrounds. Groups which exceed the design site capacity have caused long-term resource damage, site compaction and parking problems. Groups larger than 10 people who desire to be in one campsite should call or write the Flaming Gorge Ranger District offices in Dutch John or Manila for reservations reser-vations in one of the five group Reservation Campgrounds. This should ideally be done 90-120 days in advance to guarantee the desired date, concluded con-cluded Ranger Twiss. |
