Show Cow Country Rodeo judges select royalty Tryouts for Cow Country Rodeo Queen was held at the Daggett County Rodeo grounds Friday evening. There were three contestants-Derlene Reed, Pennv Beck, and Terrie Miller. Judges for the contest were Doyle Slagowski, Melanie Son, and Rusty Muir. The finalists chosen were Queen-Derlene Reed. 1st attendant-Penny Beck, and 2nd attendant-Terrie Miller. These girls were judged on appearance (personality of girls), reining pattern, horse grooming, presentation ride on their horses. The royalty will reign at the Cow Country Rodeo at Manila July 14-15. They will also reign at the Queen's dance to be held Saturday evening, July 14. The town of Manila council members, their partners, and town employees and partners had dinner at the Red Canyon Lodge Friday evening. The occasion was a farewell dinner for Clara Robinson who retired after serving as clerk for the town 12'2 years and treasurer one year. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Chas. L. Willis, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Anderson, An-derson, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Larsen, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Maloy, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Pallesen, the honored guest and husband, William Robinson. Manila Senior Citizens held the July dinner at the senior citizen center at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. There were 45 in attendance. Following the dinner a film from the Natural History -Association on the "Uintahs" was shown. It included in-cluded the history of Uintah, Daggett, and Duchesne Counties. More work was done last week on the road to the new well site for the town well to be drilled. This is in the red hills behind the high school. It is very rocky and hard for heavy equipment to reach. Funeral services were held for Lila Scofield Boren, 77, a long time resident of Manila and recently of Vernal: Lila died last Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Leon Jensen are parents of a girl born July 6 in the Uintah County Hospital in Vernal. She weighed 8 pounds and 6 ounces at birth and will be named JaNita Chris Jensen. Her maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. George Ellsworth of Manila; her paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Tom Meese of Idaho Falls, Idaho. Sue Tinker and her three daughters arc home following a weeks vacation which included a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Huston Robinson in Las Vegas, Nevada and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Mather of Salt Lake City. Visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Briggs are Mr. and Mrs. Ray Skipper and children of Gilbert, Arizona; Teresa and Cindy Briggs of Ft. Collins, Colorado. Earlier in the week Mrs. Pat Freytag and Doris Bosky of Ft. Collins visited the Briggs. Mr. and Mrs. Val Norman and children have sold their home and are moving to Logan. Val came to Manila with the Forest Service. He has been doing carpenter work for some of the Manila people. He was active in the LDS Church and was president of the young men's organization. Mrs. Norman Nor-man was active in the LDS Primary. Tuesday work meeting was held for the Manila LDS Relief Society. Jana Tinker presented a lesson on nutrition. Laurie Pay gave a demonstration on "Blender Cooking." She prepared "Strawberry Milk Smoothie", "Carrot Bread with Lemon Glaze", "Lemon Cream Cloud Pie", and "Cole Slaw" with a blender dressing. Samples of these were served as refreshments. Mrs. David Gray is back from California where they have relocated their brass foundry business. She and the children will stay here until they have sold their house. The Cow Country Rodeo will be held at the Daggett County Rodeo grounds in Manila on July 14-15. This is an annual affair. Some of the Manila people attended the Janet Polhamus and Don Scott wedding at Navajo Cliffs at 10 a.m. Saturday. Janet is a graduate of Manila High School and attended college in Texas. She served a mission for the Baptist Church in Swaziland, Africa, worked as a social worker in Rock Springs, and now works with the Right to Read Academy in Rock Springs. Her mother was former teacher in Manila and Dutch John. The groom is from Washington, North Carolina. Visiting with the children of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Campbell at the Ruble Ranch this week is Shauna Howard of Bountiful, Utah. Alma Schelt, former Sweetwater County Demonstrationist, will meet with the M & L Homemaker's Club at the Senior Citizen Center Monday afternoon af-ternoon at 1:30. She will introduce the new demonstration agent. Miss Schelt has accepted a position as Resource Specialist for four counties in Southwest South-west Wyoming. The highest temperature in Manila this week was 89 degrees July 8. Temperatures have ranged from 80 degrees up. The lowest night time temperature was 45 degrees July 6. There has been no moisture. |
