Show Paleontological study of Red Fleet Reservoir Robertson Research (U.S.) Inc., of Houston, is currently conducting an evaluation and survey in northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado This study will provide a detailed investigation in-vestigation of the paleontological resources of the areas affected by the Red Fleet Dam and West Divide ThTfield survey, to be conducted during the summer of 1979, will cover a combined total of 17,730 acres. Cursory studies indicate the West Divide Project Area is a likely location for locating remains of mammals which roamed the earth during the Tertiary Period, nearly 70 million years ago. Teeth and skeletal material of early ungulates, primitive rodents, primates, insectivores and carnivores are expected ex-pected to be found. The Red Fleet Area is expected to yield dinosaur bones and fragments of the Jurassic Period which are approximately 135 million years old. Areas which will be destroyed or eventually submerged will be outlined, and the affect on the paleontological artifacts of the area will be assessed. Recommendations for mitigation or protection measures will be made to the Bureau of Land Reclamation "We, myself, Dr. Robert E. Sl0an,, a field crew of five, will be active field for 22 or 23 days from the w July to September," said Dr. Eddje: Robertson, project coordinator. ' The area being studied in thepmi is the Morrison Formation when, will be checking the Triassic Chi..' ' Formation. If we locate any relics we will evaluate what we timi ' see if it is of any consequence. J study will not hold up construction the Red Fleet Dam, Dr. R0berti pointed out. "I have contacted Michael Pe. director of the Natural Hist0; Museum here in Vernal, at ( suggestion of Bill Collins, geologist; the Bureau of Reclamation, and Mr. Perry is interested in all of fossils we extract." " He will 'g pick' of any relics generated her. said Robertson. Dr. Robertson also stated that ; would like anyone who has fonndfe in the Red Fleet area to contact P Box 1356, Vernal, Utah. "We would!, to know where the fossils were and will evaluate what has been tor and see if they relate to our projet' |
