Show Impressive Rites Pay Tribute To Pioneer Resident With impressive funeral services the community paid last respects to one of its pioneers and oldest residents, William West, Thursday afternoon in the Timpanogos stake tabernacle. Mr. West, who was 88 years old, died at his home late Monday night after a three months illness incident to age. Bishop Junius A. West conducted the services which proceeded as follows: Vocal trio, Jeanne West, Lucile Newman and Maurine Lim; prayer, E. F. Walker; violin duet, "Abide With Me," LaVerl and Donna Neves, accompanied by. Mrs. Mary Neves. Miss Louise West, a granddaughter, granddaugh-ter, read a sketch of Mr. West's life which told of his coming across the plains to Utah with his parents when he was only six months old: his faithfulness to the gospel, his kindliness, honesty, and love of beautiful things as shown in his care of his flower garden. The sketch also included a tribute written writ-ten in poetic form by Pearl West, a daughter-in-law. Thomas Fenton, the first speaker, called attention to the fact that Mr. West has written a good chapter chap-ter in the Book of Life, a chapter full of good deeds. He said in part "I will be happy if I can live to be as old, as contented, as kindly, and as good a neighbor as Brother West" Mrs. Mary Neves played an organ solo which was followed by a talk by Joseph Olpin, a former bishop of the ward in which Mr. West lived. He recalled interesting incidents in-cidents from his boyhood association associa-tion with Brother West and his sons which revealed the character of the deceased his humility and meekness, his effective teaching of vital lessons in right living. President W. W. Warinick told of the quiet unassuming disposition disposi-tion of Brother West, who never craved the limelight. He then related re-lated a story of two men the one devoting his energies to making a name for himself while his children chil-dren took wrong paths; the other spending his quiet efforts at home, helping to rear a fine family. "I wonder," he said, "which man was greater?" |
