Show INJURY TO BEET CROP jk and lower rates on sugar to missouri river at the meetings of the directors ot the amalgamated sugar company and the Lewt stoa sugar company held wednesday afternoon the damage the beet fields have sustained through the invasion of a small fly was discussed at some length but without any course being decided upon looking to the extinction ot the pest as it was the opinion that nothing could be done this season that would in any way prove effective the destruction ol 01 the beets had already been referred to the experts at the agricultural college and after a thorough investigation the specialists decided that the farmers could do nothing it was suggested that perhaps a little more cultivating might do good but that aside from that there was nothing that could be done this year but sit on the bencs and watch the flies at work while it Is admitted that the beet crop has been damaged the managers of the sugar companies state that the crop has been more damaged in the newspapers than in the fields from the present prices quoted on sugar it would seed that this year the law of supply and demand would have but little effect here in utah it la admitted that there will be one of the smallest crops of beets on record yet contrary to the usual effect that that tact would have on the price of the manufactured article the people are promised sugar at a lower price than has been quoted for a number 0 years this Is due to the rate war now on between the railroads which makes a cut in the price of sugar necessary to meet the figures at which california sugar companies can deliver the goods in utah and at missouri river points within the last few days utah sugar has abeen given a rate of 23 cents to the missouri river although heretofore the rata has been cants |
