Sargent, Sar-gent, Cedar City, a senior at Utah State University, Is shown receiving the Air Force Gold Medal for Academic Achievement in Air Force ROTC work, from L. Sponsor Honored On Monday and Tuesday a complete Inspection of the Air Force ROTC detachment and the cadets dt College of Southern Utah, which climaxed the unit's major activities for the year were conducted during ceremonies. It emphasized final presentation of awards to cadets. Recipient of the highest honor was Cadet Lt. Col. Lorin W. Brown, Cedar City, son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Brown. He received re-ceived the Reserve Officer Association Asso-ciation citation from Col. Charles H. Wilkins, professor of air science at Kansas State College, who presided. The award represents repre-sents a sophomore's accomplishment accomplish-ment indicated by a desire for flight training and high scholastic scholas-tic attaiment In air science and general college classwork. It indicates in-dicates Individual leadership characteristics such as character, initiative, force, personality, attitude, at-titude, cooperation, military bear. Ing, neatness, discipline and other related traits. Patsy Bridges, honorary spor- sor lieutenant colonel of the auxiliary corps, received recognition recog-nition when she was named outstanding out-standing sponsor of the year. An award was made by representatives representa-tives of the local Elk's Lodge. Receiving certificates of achiev-ment achiev-ment given by the Reserve Association As-sociation were Cadets Gene Se-crlst, Se-crlst, Bountiful; Kent Averett, Heber;' Jim Miller, Parowan; Arnold Mellbr, Fayette, and Don Ritchie, Heber. Cadet Maj. Ritchie also received a Convair Corporation Corpora-tion award. He was commended " . . . for contribution to the nation's na-tion's air strength, and he is entitled en-titled to the admiration and respect re-spect of all Americans who recognize re-cognize the Importance of air power to the nation's Independence." Independ-ence." In all, 11 cadets and one sponsor spon-sor received 16 awards representing represent-ing aviation, newspapers, societies socie-ties and civic clubs. The Utah Society of the Sons of the American Revolution selected select-ed Cadet Maj. James Miller on the basis of military and patriot- Ic bearing for its award. The Chicago Tribune awards went to Cadets Morris Slack, Cedar City, and Secrist, for gold medals; and Merrill Fisher, Orderville and Larry Manzione, Beaver, for silver sil-ver medals. The bases were military mil-itary achievement, scholastic at-talnment at-talnment and character. Cadet Maj. Mark Webster received re-ceived the Lions Club award; Maj. Steve Carpenter, the Rotary, and Kent Averett, the Klwanls. Administrative officials under Maj. Ralph D. Kelley, associate professor of air science, have been engaged In the CSU detachment de-tachment preparation for the year. |
