Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOH Cedar City, Utah May 2, 1957 Dear Mr. Editor: I was very sorry to learn that Miss Emma NIelson Is leaving us, but the real sorry part is the director of the extension service has stated that no one would replace re-place her. There are eight rural communities, commu-nities, nine Including Cedar City, In Iron County who will feel the loss very soon. Who will take the lampshade, upholstery, wood. refinishlng and tailoring classes to these people? Who will give the bread demonstrations, canning can-ning and preserving and home freezing demonstrations and inspire in-spire the garden clubs and other oth-er worthwhile rural activities. In short, who Is going to help the folks be better homemakers? It's true, we have our very capable county agent with us to rely on. However, he Is human and no person has ever been able to put his feet in two pairs of shoes at one time especially when he has a full time job wearing one pair. In my 14 years of affiliation with 4-H Club work, I have had a chance to actually see the rewarding re-warding accomplishments of a home agent. I can remember when there was no county fair for young people and when there were only four or five girls' 4-H Clubs in the county. I can recall how one home agent canvassed communities and schools for 4-H 4-H Club members and leaders and how the membership practically tripled in one year because of I her efforts. I have seen many young people peo-ple take advantage of the op-nortunltles op-nortunltles offered in this work. Four club members have won trips to the 4-H Club Congress In Chlcazo. One to the 4-H Camp at Washington, D. C: several to Portland, Ore. to the International Internation-al Livestock exposition, several to Denver Colo, with their demonstrations demon-strations and Judging teams, many have been state gold medal med-al winners. I have seen four young woman from my club use scholarships won as a direct result of 4-H work. One of our very fine leaders has Just recently re-cently been elected to serve on the state 4-H Council. I have seen the standard of homemaking improve im-prove In many homes as well as my own because of the new and improved methods of accomplishing accomp-lishing home arts. Home safety safe-ty Is now a regular practice. Who can measure the good our home agents have done In encouraging youth leadership and stressing improved home-making home-making and home beautifies-tion. beautifies-tion. It seems uncanny that after af-ter the support and success the home agents have had in our county, Mr. Frlschknecht would decide he can't afford one for our county. It is true that right now the young women's extension exten-sion program is well on a train of success but take away our engine and who can say where we will get side-tracked. I say we need a home agent! What do you say? Sincerely, Mrs. Hoyce Chamberlain |
