Show Ogden Principal Makes Bid for 1st Utah District Rulon Garfield, Ogden school principal and former congressional congres-sional Interne, has anounced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Utah's First District Dis-trict He states that he as made the decision to seek the nomination nomina-tion in response to requests from friends and supporters who have encouraged him to put his "youth, political science training, and experience in Congress to work for the people of Utah." Mr. Garfield spent 1956-57 in i Congress on a fellowship from jthe American Political Science Association during which time he was made keenly aware of congressional con-gressional procedures, the people in government and the problems that confront Utah. The fellowship began with orientation sessions during which Mr. Garfield was familiarized .with the various agencies that deal with congress, such as the I Bureau of the Budget Legislative j Reference '- Service, -Legislative Council, and the White House 'Staff. The balance of the time was spent in working as a special spe-cial staff assistant to a member of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Mr. Garfield spent this time in the office of Congressman H. A. Dixon and Vice President Richard M. Nixon. Mr. Garfield, 33, is a native of Ogden, a graduate of Weber College, Col-lege, and has a M. A. in politcal science from the Unversity of Utah. He is principal of Ogden'? Bonnvillo School and a political science instructor at the BYU Ogden Og-den Center. He Is Bishop of the Ogden Fifth LDS Ward and formerly has served serv-ed in the Northern States Mission Mis-sion Presidency, Farr West High Council and other positions In the LDS Church. |
