Show Cedar Breaks District Explorers To Trek Over Old Spanish Trail High adventure on the Old Spanish Trail will be relived on the first annual 35-mile trek along portions of the trail this Friday and Saturday, April 29-30. 29-30. Explorer Scouts from several posts in Southern Utah will hike the old highway of slavers and traders as a feature of the Golden Gol-den Jubilee of American Scouting. Scout-ing. Grouping area will be at the Trail monument In New Castle Friday morning. Departure time has been scheduled for 6:30 a.m. according to Field Executive Joe New Castle southwest to Holt " Canyon then through the canyon Barney. The trail leads from - to the old Jacob Hamblin Ranch. Some time will be spent trying to locate an unmarked grave In the area and then the modern-day explorers will make camp near the monument In the Mountain Meadow. A special campflre program pro-gram will relate tales of the Trail and a tribute will be paid to the late President William R. Palmer, Southern Utah historian who did much to preserve the history of the trail. He was also a great friend of the young people peo-ple In the Iron County area. Saturday morning explorations will be carried on in an effort to uncover additional markings on the old Trail before hiking down the Magotzu Creek to trail's end at Veyo. The 65 boys and their five district leaders from Cedar Breaks and Brian Head District will do some swimming at Veyo before returning to Cedar City Saturday afternoon. Participants on the trek will be recognized with a special medal and the Historic Trail award from the National Council of Boy Scouts of America. The trip will be reported and photographed for national scouting publications according to Mr. Barney. The boys will be hiking In groups under the direction of trail guides Wayne Jones, Mc-Lain Mc-Lain Bybee, Kenneth ' Munford and Kurt Weaver, Cedar City. |
